An architect’s approach to boutique, custom built homes 


At Cambuild in Perth, we’re more than just a boutique home builder. As custom built home specialists, we’re as happy working with your preferred architect as we are recommending one. However, we have a unique ‘architect builder’ approach that means we’re perfectly equipped to help you design your new home from scratch.

With our in-house draftsman Peter Romiti as your dream home designer and our Managing Director Cam Wilkie overseeing every project, we apply an architect’s flair and attention to detail to every design. In fact, we apply the same rigorous approach to every stage of the homebuilding process.


Stage 1: Custom built home design

With so many boutique home builders to choose from, we see every commission as a great honour. It’s a responsibility we take incredibly seriously. We therefore vow to tackle every stage of the designing and building process with the utmost commitment and professionalism.

Translating your vision into a worthy design is a process that calls for the expertise of a number of professionals within our experienced Perth team. We’ll guide you every step of the way, taking you from initial interviews, to preliminary sketch plans, to detailed plans that do justice to your dream. Once you’re 100% satisfied, we will collate an estimate of costs to you and make sure everything is on track.

We see it as our duty to make the process as simple and stress-free as possible, which means ensuring your custom built home design meets your expectations, while also complying with all local government policies, the Residential Design Codes and the Building Code of Australia.


Stage 2: The planning approval process

Our ‘architect builder’ approach extends to the approvals process. We leave no stone unturned as we turn our attention to planning approval, which means meeting local government town planners. Their advice on what will or won’t gain approval is vital to any custom built home.

As a boutique home specialist, we understand that local authorities require detailed plans in order for them to process an application – almost as detailed as full working drawings. We will ensure you’re informed as your application proceeds, keeping you up to date with the many local government requirements we encounter. What’s more, we’ll also stand up for your rights, working to make sure the authorities deal with your application promptly and efficiently.


Stage 3: Working and structural drawings

Once planning approval has been received, we move to the next phase of design: turning the sketch drawings into working and structural drawings. This is where your custom built home comes into sharp focus, with a detailed specification of finishes.

The detailed drawings are ultimately sent to our trusted subcontractors and suppliers, so that we can collate quotations for everything. We then calculate a firm, fixed-price Construction Cost Quotation. It’s worth bearing in mind that, once firm quotes have been obtained and the contract has been signed, you can rest easy in the knowledge that there won’t be any nasty hidden costs further down the line.


Stage 4: Completion and a building licence

Once the quotations have been agreed, our boutique home building team submit all of the construction drawings to the local authority so that we can obtain a building licence. Once issued, we can proceed immediately with the construction of your custom built home.


Stage 5: The boutique home construction process

As construction commences, you’ll get to meet more members of our close-knit ‘architect builder’ team, all committed to making the journey from drawings to dream home a rewarding and enjoyable one.

Our consultants can advise you on every element of your custom built home: interior decorating, lighting, air conditioning, furniture layouts, spas, pools, landscaping...anything you need assistance with. In fact, as a boutique home builder, we have open and transparent working relationships with a host of external consultants who we are happy to recommend, liaise with on your behalf or simply introduce you to, so you can deal with them directly.
